I've used their site's tools to create color palettes and patterns and shared with colourlovers community. It's been over a year since I've been there. One of the reason was because I discovered Adobe Illustrator and started using it to create patterns and got totally hooked.
A few days ago I wanted to log back in just to look around. There are lots of groups to join and one of my favorites is the Artist Palette Challenge. It's been so long that I almost forgot how to post my palette correctly. But there is easy to follow instructions and after doing one, it all came back. This is what I created today based on the image below.
Well, to be clear ... all the posts (e.g. this post) that I had written about the class were really all testimonials to the class. But this one is a Typography testimonial. Ok to be really honest there is an extra incentive ... a chance to win the next module of the class. How great will that be if I win! It was a lot of fun to do. But what was not fun was when I couldn't save a jpeg (high resolution version) because my stupid computer ran out of memory. Good thing this was done with Adobe Illustrator, so I was able to scaled it down and save it that way. This is what I came up with.
I am still creating patterns and also taking a few more classes on pattern designs.
But first let me raise my glass to Elizabeth and her T Stands for Tuesday gang.

Icy Cherry

We had some cherries that were not tasting so sweet fresh, so I pitted them all and threw them into the freezer thinking that we could use it with ice cream. But I found this really simple recipe for an icy on the web. I made the simple syrup (one part water to one part sugar) with some lime zest and lime juice. My daughter blended the frozen cherries with ice and added the syrup to taste. We don't like drinks too sweet so we didn't add the full recommended amount. It was SUPER good. This recipe actually worked quite well with peaches and I am sure it will work just as well with other fruits.
Now going back to the classes ... the first one was part of the Make It In Design Module 1 class that I took a few months ago. This is a free Summer School that's 6 weeks long with 3 design briefs. I didn't submit to all of the design briefs because some of them I just simply couldn't come up with anything that I thought will be different or unique. So I winded up just looking at what everyone was doing. Of course now that I thought about it, I should have just turned the computer off and just do my own thing first.
The other was a free 3 days live broadcast class with Bonnie Christine called Design Surface Patterns From Scratch put out by Creativelive. While the class was being broadcast live, it was free or you could buy it at a discount. You can purchase it right now. It is an incredible value for the price they charged for that class. Bonnie Christine is such a great designer and teacher. Check her out at her site called goinghometoroost. She showed not just her process but a lot of Adobe Illustrator techniques as well. I really can't say enough about how wonderful she was and somehow her process just clicked. At the end of the class she challenged all the students to create a 6 pattern collection for a chance to win a whole lot of prices. Also she had started a blog tour for any student who wants to join in the fun of showing their pattern designs. A few of us raised our hands after this initial blog tour list came out but she will be adding us to the tour and mine is October 28th. So keep an eye out for that.
Here's the inspiration board and the collection I did for the Design Surface Patterns From Scratch class. Most of the images are my own but a few were from the web. The pattern collection image may not show all the details for each pattern. But after reading about how some designers got their designs stolen and people are selling them as their own, I guess I should post only low resolution version. I am not sure if I will use this exact version for the blog tour, or tweak it or use a whole new collection. We'll see ...
Ok off to visit the T-gang!creatormehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12783383505232030325noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-609478230472231942.post-53592561308407703572014-07-08T20:12:00.000-07:002014-07-08T20:12:55.861-07:00A Mug For TI have a few more hours, so I should be able to post this on Tuesday so I can join Elizabeth at T Stands for Tuesday. I've been drinking water later, so instead of posting a boring cup of water, I decided to put one of the flowers I did for a pattern on a mug. I am learning how to do product mockups so this will work as one of my practices.

I know (and was told) this pattern has a country look to it and would fit in a country kitchen curtain. But since I don't have a blank mockup for cafe curtain, I put it on a dress instead. Actually it's not too bad as a dress. I need more practice with getting the lighting and pattern to look more natural on the mockup image.

And since I am posting and it's Tuesday, I should raise a cup to Elizabeth and her Tuesday gang over at T Stands for Tuesday. I've really been into ginger mint tea since I planted some mints in the backyard. I have found that with very little effor, I could have a very refreshing drink of mint water. Just add the fresh mint in a glass (or cup for me)and muddled it and then add ice water. But don't over muddle if not your water will taste "green". Yuck!

I don't post too much because I have a tendency to ramble on and it winds up taking me a LONG time to do one post. So I will keep this short with mostly pics, so I can spend the time visiting the T-gang instead.
Here's a couple that was sketched using Sketchbook Pro, then pattern created with Adobe Illustrator.
I've used mainly Adobe Illustrators to create my patterns but lately I have started to learn how to do it with Photoshop. The motifs can be a bit more painterly. It's a lot of fun as well.
But wanted to join them this week. First off, what' in my cup today. Nothing fancy ... just felt like some good old Lipton and a bit of mint from the backyard. The container in the back are filled with cookies that my daughter made. But I was good and had my healthy oatmeal instead.
The 5 weeks of Module 1 Surface Pattern Design at Make It In Design is over. Here's a sweet gift all the way from England (super sweet) for each student.

Even though the class is over, the private Facebook page is still buzzing. Everyone is producing a lot of work and setting up their web sites and coming up with their logo, etc. I am not as prolific but I am still doing what I like. I do find that the more I look at others work, the more influenced I am. That can be a good or a bad thing. I guess I will need to put a filter on what I am looking.
Here's one inspired by some jade plants in the backyard. I was very unhappy with the first color palette. I posted it at the class' private Facebook group and got some great feedback and encouragement and here's a few variations. Like always hours can be suck out just playing around with different color palettes. So much fun!
But determined to join back in this week. This drink (well the pic) is a bit old since it was meant for last Tuesday.
We have some mints growing in the back yard. Even though it's shared by some invisible bugs that really like it (see the holes in the leaves), it is really growing like a weed. Didn't know it is so invasive. If not I would have started it in a pot isolated from the other herbs.
This is green tea with mint and ginger. I used a piece of cheese cloth to hold the loose tea leaves and ginger so I could fish them out easier. I love putting ginger in my tea. This actually tastes pretty good hot or cold.
Now as for what I've been up to ... I've been learning/writing some code for an Android app idea that a friend has. He's writing the user interface portion and I am working on the database portion.
Also I am trying to keep up with the surface Pattern Design class. It's a five week class and this is the last week already. I signed up for the class hoping to learn the process from finding inspiration to a creating a design. This class definitely delivered what I was looking for and more. The class' community (a facebook private group) is really great. It is good to hear that others are going through and struggling with the same issues. It helps to not feel so alone. Other classmates being very helpful and supportive really make this class that much better. There are a lot of really good designers in the class. It's hard not to compare but I am going to keep reminding myself not to do that.

Don't Compare

Here's the coordinated design exercise. After staring at the design and wondering why it doesn't look good, I realized that just turning the opacity of the smaller leaves in background didn't work very well. That wasn't enough to make the main leaves and flowers stand out. The one with the blue background worked much better because the smaller background leaves were a different color. I have a lot to learn and experiment with placement and colors but I am really enjoying this despite the frustration a lot of time.

Coordinated Design

And then there is the "happy accident". I was using Illustrator's recolor feature and randomly switching colors around. I really like that color palette. Unfortunately with accidents, I didn't not save the pattern swatch. But I might go back and recreate it.
Now I am off to visit the rest of the Tuesday gang!
Exercises for today was to create some color palette from photos. Since it's Tuesday, I figured I would find some tea cups or tea sets. This will work for both Elizabeth's T(ea) for Tuesday and the design class' exercises. Besides who wants to see a cup with plain old water 'cause that's all I had this morning after my oatmeal breakfast.
Here's a photo I found from pinterest.

Here's another that I did for a challenge at the colourlovers site quite a while ago. The photo was a Mike Worrall's Quest For Symmetry. I haven't been to the colourlovers site for quite a long time. They have a tool to create patterns as well and you can color it with your won palette or someone else and credit will be link to that person. It was a really fun site.

This third one is from the Santa Barbara side walk chalk event from LONG time ago when the kids were young.

It's funny looking back at these palettes and see how I organized those color swatches. Or rather in this case the lack of organization. They are just all over the place.
Well, time to hop over and see what the rest of the T(ea) for Tuesday gang is up to.
I've learned how to use AI to make repeat patterns but Photoshop was my first. I used the motifs and marks from the class so far and make a pattern with PS.

Here's the pattern made with PS. I created a green background but the colors of the motifs were made by changing the layer mode and its opacity.

Pattern Created With PS

The class showed how to create patterns with both PS and AI. I figured I should do one in AI as well. I didn't really followed the instructions from the class since I had learned how to do repeat patterns in AI already. But I have the class notes and I will go back and read through the notes at some points. But right now just felt like playing around with pattern making.
Here's the first one.

Thought the colors on these two were a bit boring. So I used the Recolor Artwork feature and played with the colors. That was such a terrible idea because I wind up spending way too much time playing with that tool. After all that playing around, I did save one other version.

The two made with AI reminded me of the silk Chinese fabric that is used in traditional women dresses called Cheongsam or also known as qipao.
There are really a lot of very talented classmates in that design class. There is really so much energy and momentum in the class that you can't help but get swept along with it. I really need that. I am not sure if I am finding my style yet. But definitely will keep going and see where it will lead me.
Notice?! Only half a muffin! Those suckers from Costco are huge. The mug was from the last project I supported. A group of us were working in Phoenix AZ for that. Back to present ... continuing with week2 of the design class. Last week and this week is really about observation, deconstructing patterns and letting loose and making marks. I like some of the marks in the Mark Making 2 and this was a bit looser than the first one. This page was made with water color. I like the marks made with a dryer brush. The first half of the first page was with crayons and color pencil.
It is interesting (and a relief) that a lot of the classmates feel the same way about loosing up and just make marks. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging that it's been less scary to share what I have done.

Ok off to visit others at Elizabeth's T-party and maybe also play around with these scanned images as well.
I like how diverse the group is in what everyone is doing. AND I really need the push for some discipline. Sorry I don't have my drink to share.
I mentioned that I started a pattern design class Monday. Yesterday's exercise was to discover shapes and drawing them. I spent a lot of time looking at everyone's work and started out really
late last night. Finally got something put together this morning and posted it at the FB group. I think one
of the reasons I kept looking at others work instead of doing my own is
because I don't have a habit of sketching. I have never had any drawing
classes. I've only read books and tutorials online to try to learn and
this exercise is making me very uncomfortable. The other difficult thing was deciding what to draw/sketch. So going through my photos and picking something took quite a while. That was a stupid way to waste a lot of time. Another thing I have a hard time doing is simplify. I had to really concentrate and kept remembering the word "simplify" when I was sketching. This is what I posted.

Oh and speaking of having problems deciding what to draw/sketch ... I am also taking the Introduction to Computational Arts: Visual Arts at coursera.org. Not sure why the fancy name since the material itself is just a beginner's Photoshop (and Gimp) class. Since I already know some of the PS features it's been a pretty easy (therefore fun) class until this last assignment. All the assignment said was to create something with images and text and use all the features that were taught. Oh and use your own photos. So with that wide open, I spent most of the time looking through my stash of photos and deciding what to do vs doing it! This is what I submitted. The subject line is lame but it met the assignment's criteria.
I like the last week's assignment much better. It was a lot more fun putting it together. I made a couple of versions.
Well I better get going to see what Day 3's exercise and of course to go visit all the fine ladies at T for Tuesday.

creatormehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12783383505232030325noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-609478230472231942.post-72142091746493215802014-03-24T18:55:00.000-07:002014-10-12T23:41:09.054-07:00Surface Pattern Design ClassI've been hovering over a couple of surface pattern design classes for quite a while now. I've finally signed up for Module 1 of the pattern design class at Make It In Design and the 5 weeks class started today. I hesitated for the longest time because having no arts background I wasn't sure if I even fit in and also it's not cheap. There are so many people in the class and it's amazing reading all of their backgrounds. Talk about feeling intimidated! But there are a few who do not have any art background either.
It just started today and the private FB group is absolutely buzzing with everyone submitting what they have done in the "Just For Fun" exercise making some strip, dots and circular patterns. I've been doing EVERYTHING on the computer for a long time now. After reading the instructions and the examples, I was so stumped that I didn't know what to do. We were supposed to make patterns from real things?! OMG ... all I could think of was that I don't have anything. Of course in reality, I have so much "stuff" sitting around (fabric, yarn, ribbons, paper, you name it ...) I could have used any of them. I think it was just panic because of the large number of artists and designers in the class. And the monster of comparing myself with others came right out and grab me even though the instructions' video specifically said not to do that. I am not a very good student I guess ... LOL.
A couple of things I have sitting close to me are old catalogs and magazines. So I torn strips off the pages from a magazine and laid them on a white piece of paper. Took a picture of it and decided to try a black background also to see the difference. The lighting the house was so bad and the pictures didn't come out very good. So I brought them into Photoshop and adjusted the levels.

One of the fellow students suggested combining the two. I really did not think it through when I was combining them. If I were to do it properly I would have sized them both to about the same size and clean the overlapping edge to match the torn look.

The above combined version was laying the 2 images side by side. But before I got to that point, I had brought in both images each in a layer and by accident, I had changed the top layer's mode to "difference". I thought the result was quite nice. I took a screen capture of it so I can see what the setting was because I wasn't going to save the file. Then played around with each of the modes and got the following 2 that I really liked.
It's Tuesday and it's been a pretty good start! Unlike yesterday which scared me half to death awakened by the earthquake. What made this morning so good! Well, a picture tells a thousand words.

What's for breakfast!

I added some Mocha Cappuccino to my coffee (only half a cup) because I ran out of creamer and didn't feel like using the powder version. It was yummy! And to go with that ... a few thin mints! I was trying to be really good and only took 3 out and immediately put the rest away. If not I probably would have eaten one whole box.
See that book under the cappuccino can? Someone mentioned it to me and I found a used version and got it for $5 total. It's a hard covered book and the only thing used about it was the paper jacket's corners being just a tiny bit worn. It's a really nice book and I was so happy when it arrived in the mail!
I listened to an audio book that I had downloaded from the public library onto my Nexus (see my pretty blue Nexus in the link), flipping through the book and randomly copied some of the flowers.
I could have typed some text in a layer, resized it and then rasterized the layer (after that I won't be able to edit the text anymore) all in Sketchbook Pro. But instead I did the text in Adobe Illustrator and use a different line (or stroke) style and exported the file in tiff format because that's SBP default file format. That took no time at all to do. I figured it would have taken me a lot longer to try to draw the different line thickness by hand in SBP. I am sure there are other way to do this. But I didn't feel like taking too much time to figure this out. I just wanted to start drawing my flowers.
I am thinking of flowers inside the letters and leaves outside ... or some doodle patterns. Well, I will see where this goes.
But now let me go join in the T Stands For Tuesday gang and see what others are up to.creatormehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12783383505232030325noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-609478230472231942.post-16213788488380574812014-03-17T01:48:00.000-07:002014-03-17T01:53:13.817-07:00My TabletI went over to Vicki's at Fibre Art and she was following along on a digital drawing. So I decided to use the same prompt (what's on my table) for my sketching today. It's always easier to use a prompt from somewhere else. I find it hard to decide on my own. Silly I know cause I could just pick anything. Not that hard. But it's surprisingly hard. LOL ...
What's on my table right in front of me is my Wacom tablet and today I have my Nexus 7 in front as well because I had downloaded a book from the public library and was listening as I sketched. I used to pay to rent audio books at bookfree.com when I had my long daily commute to work. I liked them a lot because there were a couple of times when my returned CDs never reached them. They never questioned or charged me for them and just sent me my next CDs on my queue.
Anyway, back to my sketch ... I did it with my SBP and of course those are not the only 2 things on my table. As a matter of fact my table is a mess and it will be a disgrace to show anyone. I used the ruler tool to make those nice straight lines and the eclipse tool to make the nice curve on the bottom of the wacom tablet. I used to feel guilty using any of those tools. I felt like I should do everything free hand. But then I remembered reading drawing some how to books that used the same kinds of tools. Well, I decided I am not going to feel guilty about this anymore and I will all the tools available to the fullest to enough myself. For each additional part of the sketch, I would add it on a new layer. After I am satisfied with it then I will merge them. I a lot of times I will keep quite a few layers and go back and forth between them and merge them all at the end. I still mess up which layer I am on sometimes even having labeled each layer. I just get too into the drawing and forget to switch.
I know I should have included the ear buds that I had plugged into the Nexus. I was listening to my audio book as I was drawing. So that's my excuse for not having them. But to be honest I was getting a little lazy and didn't feel like drawing them.
I had taken some pictures of this tablet and the dates on them was 2008. So I had this tablet for at least that long but I think I had it longer than that. I didn't use it that often back then and any serious digital artist used to have at least the Intuos 4. Since I was not (and still is not) a pro buying an Intous 3 was way too much and expensive. Ah well, those were definitely the days when I used to buy things just to buy. creatormehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12783383505232030325noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-609478230472231942.post-7900577713700854512014-03-14T23:25:00.000-07:002014-03-14T23:25:16.206-07:00A Bit Of DoodlingThis started out as a submission to Weekly Challenge #158: "Duotangle: Diva Dance + Crescent Moon" but I am not sure if it actually looked too much like the Diva Dance or Crescent Moon. I just finished my oatmeal breakfast and really didn't feel like drinking anything right away. So decided to share one of my non-white mugs. My daughter enjoys using these non-whites because they are pretty big so she can have these huge mugs of hot chocolate. I must have bought this at the company store 3 years ago. I thought it was really pretty ... all black and smooth with just the company name and logo. Very simple! Why did I buy it? I have no use for yet another mug especially since I was trying to get rid of all those mis-matched mugs.
A friend once told me that a lot of the things we bought were to fill the void we got from the rush and lack of time in our daily lives. Never really thought of it that way. But I know it's true for me. It was so bad that a couple of times I had bought the same thing twice because I had forgotten that I had already bought it. Now every time I pick something up, my friend's saying rings in my head. Can't say I have stopped doing that totally but certainly have stopped a lot more of those useless purchases for me.
Well at least this mug was "free" because this was bought with points. Points were given usually after completing a major milestone or some special accomplishment.
But on to a different subject ... I love spring and I hate spring! I love it because everything is blooming. I hate spring because all that blooming triggered my allergy and it's been really bad! I take allergy medicine only when I can't hold out any longer because it just put me to sleep. But even with the allergy, I can't help but went and cut some of the flowers in the back yard. I don't have much of a green thumb but I love bulbs. I've got snow drops, freesia, the ones in the photos below and others that will bloom later in the summer. They are so easy to grow and they come back each year with hardly any work. My kind of gardening!
I am always looking for prompts and challenges to join to give myself a focus to work on. Terry Grant at And Sew It Goes is doing some weekly digital drawing and this week's is favorite tool kitchen or otherwise. My kitchen tool is my rice cooker. It does more than just cook rice but I never used it for anything other than rice. It's so easy ... just add rice and water, push a button and just wait till it's done. It takes about half an hour. Perfect rice every time. Love it! Depends on it. Anyway, just borrowing the topic. Hope Terry won't mind!
I signed up at Creative Every Day but have not be posting there even though I have been sketching. Maybe it's about time. This doesn't really fit into the "optional" theme of Transition but why not!
I am still using Sketch Book Pro and did the counter, rice cooker outline, coloring, shadow in different layers. I also used the ruler and eclipse tool to do some of the shapes and outlines.
I didn't want to show my white mug last week. But I thought about it this week and you all were right that there is nothing wrong with a white mug! Especially if it's filled with HOT CHOCOLATE!!!! HAHAHAHAHA ... well I only allowed myself half a cup. Yum!
I know the 29 Faces challenge was over and I didn't do it everyday and didn't make it on time. But I decided I was going to complete it.
I was looking at books on Amazon and saw this one suggesting doing all the parts of a face and then just picking and choosing the parts to form a face. I thought it was such a fun idea so I gave it a try. I googled to get some ideas for different expressions.
Since this was done digitally, I just had to copy and paste the parts to form each face. I did one face at a time and I didn't repeat any of the parts on different faces. First I divided the page into 8 parts and did the shapes for the faces (and didn't need google's help ... I am that good! Not! lol) and then the mouths and so on. The eyes I really needed google images' help. After that I added a new layer and start with copying the shape of the face and pasting it on that new layer, then chose the eyes, nose and mouth. I would enlarge or elongate or flatten the parts till they looked the way I liked. I did some clean up or details on them but I pretty much stick with the original parts as much as possible. But I did shaped some of the faces so a squared face is not really "square", etc. The lady with the triangular face had a bit of an upper lip and I gave her some extra eye shadow. She looked like she needed it. After each face I would lock that layer because I have a tendency to work on the wrong layer. Then it would defeat the purpose of doing the drawing digitally.
It was a lot of fun doing them and amazed myself how each character evolved. At one point I started added shading and more lines. I stopped myself because that wasn't the point. I was trying to just let loose and come up with something fast and fun. Being realistic was not the point!
Remembering it is Tuesday, I was going to share my coffee mug over at Elizabeth's T(ea) for Tuesday! But one look at it and decided against it. Why? Cause it's a plain white mug ... no ... no white mug. Since I have my old Painter program opened, I decided to have a pink mug instead. I know it's kind of a silly little cup.
I was looking through my brushes in the Painter program and realized that Painter is now up to 13 (Painter X3) and I have 10 (Painter X). Since mine is a few versions behind, I could not do an upgrade. Can't justify buying a full version right now ($399 Ouch!). Actually can't justify upgrading ($199) either.
Well since I am posting, I might as well include the faces I did last week but have not posted. The baby in Day 18 had this really crocked smile that I don't think I quite captured it. Not sure what's up with the baby in Day 19. It was such a tight shot, so I couldn't tell. The kid in Day 20 was in a bath tub. I guess he didn't like to get wet! : ) The little girl in Day 21 was just the prettiest and those eyes were perfect. I couldn't see the hair in the photo and didn't want to just make something up. So I left it as is. It's looked a bit strange leaving it like that. I was trying to get different expressions. I was getting a little tired of just female faces. Funny that I found myself making the same facial expression as I was drawing them. Maybe that helped!
But I think I am still a couple behind. But definitely catching up. If I do that again, I just may be ahead! Lol ... Day 16 looks a bit scary both doing it and the way it turned out. Sad! But I am going to do my best to join in more often. So I did a whole bunch of tea cups on one page. Why? Well, maybe any one or all of the following reasons. 1) to make up for all the times that I wanted to join in but missed 2) get a little ahead so I already made a whole bunch for the weeks to come 3) practice to just let go and not be such a perfectionist (so annoying sometimes) 4) keep practicing to have fun!
But I will still post what I did for day 8 & 9 anyway.

I like day 8's face but not the hair. I like the color but it looked unfinished. Did use a reference photo. Just whatever I remember what I have seen how others have done it.

Day 9 was from a sketch in a book. The back doesn't look quite right but not quite sure how to change it. Maybe I will go back or do another one with the same angle some day.
I've been playing around with the Madpattern templates and I absolutely love them and so thankful to the creators. However, it's kind of odd that I can't seem to be able to create an AI swatch with some of them. I am not sure if or how I might have done anything wrong or different. I used the same steps for each template or so I thought. Here's one of them that didn't work but I like it and thought this is a fun pattern.
I did look up the boxing glove on the net for inspiration. These are very simple vector drawings. I didn't put any effect or anything, so it didn't take long to create with Adobe Illustrator. So I got 2 png files that I can call my own to use in my own app, Hugs&Punches ... Fun!
Ok now back to the code, it's due Sunday!
