3rd Pattern Bird

Finished the 3rd pattern bird. Not sure if the patterns on it were a bit too busy. I like to keep some of the features and colors that were in the original bird. I liked this bird's color around it's eyes, beak and its pink legs. This photo was taken in San Francisco and had the Golden State bridge behind it along with some land scrape. But I decided not to attempt to paint them in.  So I kept with a colored background. But I did keep the brick wall it was standing on.
I am pretty late for AEDM day 27 but I made it! Wow can't believe there's only 3 more AEDM days to go!

  1. I really LIKE this bird. I don't think it's too busy. I really like the contrast. Not just beautiful, but a lovely addition to your bird collection.

  2. Thanks Elizabeth. My daughter saw this bird and said it's eyes looked mean. I felt that way about it too. I think it's because of the color. I didn't mind it looking mean. : ) But she did say she liked it.

  3. I love these birds and the patterns you add to them. I think that your decision to leave the background simple works well while keeping the wall. Are these done digitally or by hand? They look by hand to me but the lines are so clean I wonder. Oh, and I like the way the shadows works around the bird to keep him three diminutional. Love it!

  4. Thanks moongirl. Yes these are done digitally. I used a program call Sketchbook Pro and a wacom tablet and a stylus. These birds are done "by hand" just not on paper. This program does have some really useful tools like ruler and you can make your own brushes. Most of the straight lines on it's back were made with the ruler. If you zoom in you'll see that a lot of the lines are not that clean. But I do use the eraser to clean some of the lines. Maybe some day I will write down how I draw the pattern animals.

  5. These are really stunning. I still can't believe they aren't hand drawn on paper - that programme is fantastic! the way the colours work against the monochrome of the bird is so lovely.

  6. Thanks Nic. I am learning more on how to use this program and loving it more each day. They are hand drawn but just not on paper. I really admire how you all can do it on pen and paper. If I do that (which I did), 99% of my work would be crumbled up and thrown away or left unfinished. I am afraid of that pen/brush and paper! Lol ... This digital route has really freed me up to just create.
